Jalopnik: The All-Acrylic Lexus LFA Looks Cold As Ice

So cool that it needs no explanation....
This transparent sculpture, by Japanese architect Scu Fujimoto, displayed at Milan Design Week earlier this year, of the new $375,000 Lexus LFA super car just revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show is stunning. Old, yes, but still stunning.

What's most impressive about the piece is details like the seats, instrument panel, engine and the suspension can all be seen. According to Lexus, the sculpture is constructed from transparent acrylic boards that have been sanded and polished. All we know is it's simply epic.

Honda Design Explain Changes to Production CRZ

For the first time in its history, Honda invited a select group of North American media to pay a visit to its design studio this week following the Tokyo Motor Show. While we didn't see any secret new cars today, we did sit down for a chat with Nobuki Ebisawa, general manager of global design for Honda. Among other things we discussed the design of the new CR-Z hybrid sport coupe.

Honda unveiled an updated concept version of the CR-Z at the show that is actually a very thinly veiled version of the production model that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The new concept remained on the show floor while the original 2007 concept was on display in the studio along with two quarter scale clay models. One model was of the original proposal from early 2007 while the other model was the 2009 concept. The original proposal model and the production car are both the work of Motoaki Minowa, while the actual concept that was built in 2007 was produced by Makoto Iwaki. Read on to learn more about the changes.

In many respects the production car is closer in detail to that 2007 Minowa model than to the 2007 full-size Iwaki concept, particularly in the character lines on the flanks that yield a bit of a cutout in the middle of the car.The Iwaki design has flatter sides.

There are other differences from both original designs to the production car. The sides of the greenhouse have been more vertical than inward sloping tumble home of the concepts. This was done to provide a more spacious feeling interior for occupants. Further aiding interior space is a higher roof. The other big change was the wheelbase which was shortened although we don't have exact dimensions. The result is a longer front overhang on the production car although the overall length of the production model is unchanged.

Ebisawa-san explained that this was done for several different reasons. The longer overhang provides more crush space to help with crash safety performance. It also allows more tapering of the front corners (as seen from above) which aids both pedestrian safety performance and air-flow for reduced aerodynamic drag. Another benefit that Ebisawa-san highlighted was improved, more nimble handling that results from the shorter axle span.

Ebisawa-san also answered our question about the grille shape of the CR-Z and the similar nose of the SkyDeck concept that also debuted in Tokyo. We asked if this design would become the new Honda standard. Ebisawa-san explained that unlike Acura, Honda won't be using a single face for its entire lineup. Instead it will have different looks for different families just as the light truck/SUVs already differ from cars in the US. The CR-Z style scoop grille will be reserved for sporty models.

TOV: 41st Tokyo Motor Show: Address by President and CEO Takanobu Ito

Since Honda's foundation, creating personal mobility as a means to provide basic transportation for people has been the primary focus of our business. By continuing to provide more freedom and the fun of mobility and help people lead more convenient and comfortable lives, last year, we provided some 23 million motorcycles, automobiles and power products to our customers around the world.

Leveraging our strength as a manufacturer of motorcycles, automobiles, and power products, we will strive to be at the forefront in the area of the environment and energy technology by addressing the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions in a more comprehensive manner through further improvement in the fuel economy of existing products and also through the use of new technologies, such as solar cells and electromotive technologies, for each type of mobility product.

At this year's motor show, we designed our booth to propose Honda's vision for mobility of the near future. We are proposing the concept of "Hello!" representing the "Honda Electric mobility Loop" which attempts to comprehensively express our vision to provide both products that generate electricity and mobility products that run on electricity.

These are the products displayed at the "Hello!"zone.

The central Hello! product is the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle, which runs on electricity generated by hydrogen reacting with oxygen.

This compact city commuter is the EV-N, a battery electric vehicle for which Honda pursued a very simple design form.

The EV-Cub is an electric motorcycle offering the familiar design and outstanding convenience expected of a Super Cub.

The EV-Monpal is an electric personal mobility which helps to permit a life with greater peace of mind and comfort.

And this is our new mobility device, the U3-X, which uses technologies developed through the ASIMO bipedal humanoid program and was designed to co-exist in harmony with people.

All of these products run on clean energy -- either hydrogen or electricity -- produced from solar power.

In addition, each model features interactive communication technologies that showcase the fun ways in which mobility devices can interact with people and society.

Over the long term, the advancement of electromotive technologies is an important factor for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Among potential solutions, we believe that the fuel cell electric vehicle will be the ultimate form for automobiles in the future as it has advantages such as zero CO2 emissions in use, can travel considerable distances without refueling and can be quickly refueled.

Since the 1990s, Honda has been independently developing the fuel cell stack, the core technology of a fuel cell electric vehicle, and leading the industry in creating a fuel cell stack of the highest performance and efficiency. The fuel cell stack on display today is lightweight, compact, and ready for large scale commercial production in the future.

As a result, the FCX Clarity achieved a spacious cabin and innovative exterior styling which emerged from packaging that would be impossible to create with an internal combustion engine. In addition, the FCX Clarity achieves both smooth, perfectly linear acceleration and the unparalleled quietness of an electric vehicle, offering an entirely new kind of driving enjoyment. The FCX Clarity has been available for lease in the United States and Japan since last year, and this year we have begun conducting experiments on public roads in Europe. Going forward, Honda will continue to advance fuel cell stack technology preparing for the more widespread use of fuel cell vehicles in the future.

In the area of battery electric vehicles, Honda offered the EV Plus for lease starting in 1997, in Japan and the U.S. Through these lease sales, we obtained customer feedback on the daily use of the vehicle and customers' expectations and requirements. In addition, various technologies and know-how in areas such as motor drive and high-voltage control were applied to the development of the FCX Clarity and our hybrid vehicles. At this moment, considering the level of battery performance, Honda is conducting research on battery electric vehicles as short-distance commuter vehicles. The EV-N and EV-Cub on display today represent the direction Honda is taking in this area.

However, we believe that Honda should prioritize the more widespread use of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles at this stage in the advancement of electromotive technologies. We can contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by making hybrid vehicles with excellent environmental performance available to even more people. We believe this is the most important challenge for us and we will enhance our hybrid lineup based on these beliefs.

We're introducing the CR-Z Concept 2009, which represents our proposal for a new hybrid model.

The CR-Z Concept 2009 is the world's first hybrid vehicle equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Together with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine the vehicle will create completely new value by combining the fun of driving and outstanding fuel economy.

The compact, lightweight and highly efficient Honda hybrid system, known as IMA, is packaged within an advanced form based on a "low, short, and wide" design concept. We plan to launch a production automobile based on the CR-Z Concept 2009 in Japan in February of next year, and then in Europe and North America.

The Skydeck hybrid is a study model focused on the concept of freely expanding opportunity and fun in people's lives regardless of their age or lifestyle. Striving to achieve "a vehicle which fulfills the needs of each customer," the Skydeck's compact body contains a flexible and high-utility space for transporting multiple people and the tools and equipment for the activities they enjoy.

In addition to our hybrid lineup, we're exhibiting automobiles that are fun to use and to drive including the all-new Step WGN, which achieved the largest interior space in its class, best-in-class fuel economy and features under-floor storage for third-row seats, as well as the Civic Type R Euro, which we plan to introduce in Japan in November. We invite you to take a closer look.

We also have for you today a selection of Honda motorcycles.

To expand the motorcycle market especially among younger people, we believe the key will be pursuing FUN technologies, which includes technologies that enable riders to experience the fun of being in control of the motorcycle and designs which provide the joy of ownership.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Honda "CB" line, we've developed the CB1100 as "the CB for a new era." The CB1100 is equipped with a simple, air-cooled, in-line four-cylinder engine, much in demand by experienced riders, and a design of functional elegance. Designed to please the most discerning veteran rider, we expect that the CB1100, featuring technologies chosen specifically for this model, will have a catalyzing effect on the sports bike segment in Japan.

Making its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show this year is the VFR1200F, a high value-added FUN sports touring model featuring next-generation styling and the latest technologies-all of which make it the perfect bike for long-distance rides. The VFR1200F also will be available with the world's first dual clutch transmission for motorcycles. This lightweight, compact automatic transmission offers exceptionally fine control, as well as fuel economy as good as or better than that of standard manual transmissions. The shift feel is exceptionally smooth and direct for outstanding riding enjoyment.

Honda will be launching the VFR1200F first in Europe, and then in Japan and North America.

Next we have the VT1300 Series. The VT1300 Series offers three models with designs full of character to match the tastes and needs of discriminating riders. In addition, thanks to Honda's original technologies, highly stable handling has joined forces with stylish cruiser design.

The EVE-neo is a next-generation, electric commuter motorcycle that is durable and provides outstanding convenience for business use. We are making progress in the development of the EVE-neo with plans to introduce it to market in the near future.

We also have many more exciting motorcycles on display, so please take your time and see them all.

We also have for you today a selection of power products.

Making people's lives more convenient and comfortable is the passion behind our power products business.

Sales of the Pianta tiller, which runs on ordinary household butane gas canisters, has been growing strong since it was introduced to the Japanese market earlier this year as a new category of tiller product. Today, we are exhibiting our second product that runs on butane gas canisters: the ENEPO generator, designed as a generator that is a more user-friendly and personal item that is easy to use, store and transport. Development of the ENEPO generator is proceeding rapidly, and we currently plan to launch it in Japan in the spring of 2010.

In addition to these products, Honda will continue offering power products which fulfill the diverse needs of our customers, including solar panels and the Monpal electric 4-wheel scooter.

Since the company's foundation, Honda associates have always dedicated themselves to dreaming up ideas to make life more convenient and enjoyable. But we don't stop there. We continue taking on the challenge to turn such dreams into products with our own technologies and offer these products to people around the world. Combining passion and technology is Honda's basic approach as a manufacturer.

More than 50 years ago, we created Super Cub, which continues to be popular among customers around the world. In the 1970s, we created the Honda CVCC engine, which became the world's first to comply with the U.S. Clean Air Act. Today, as we expressed in our booth concept of "Creating the never before!" we will continue our R&D efforts to quickly deliver convenient, fun and unique products to our customers in a way only Honda can do. Please do look forward to these efforts.

Thank you again, ladies and gentlemen. I wish you a very pleasant time at the Honda booth and the Tokyo Motor Show this year.

Tokyo 2009: Honda EV-N concept combines future drive with retro style

Honda's new CEO Takanobu Ito started off his tenure at the head of the company today by unveiling a new plug-in battery electric concept. The EV-N showcar hides its futuristic electron pumping powertrain in a decidedly retro bodystyle thanks to a design reminiscent of the subcompact 600N of the Sixties.

Honda has yet to reveal much in the way of technical details about the diminutive hatch, but we do know it uses lithium-ion batteries and the electric motor drives the front wheels. The car can be started with a fob called the Loop that incorporates a display showing the driver know the battery pack's state of charge.

Not enough pint-size fun for you? Each of the EV-N's doors features a pocket that holds one of Honda's gyro controlled, omnidirectional U3-X unicycles.

Honda CR-Z Concept 2009 Makes World Debut at the Tokyo Motor Show

Honda today debuted the much-anticipated CR-Z Concept 2009, the second concept version of the stylish, sporty hybrid coupe, at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show. While the vehicle displayed at the show is a global concept with a rear seat, the production version that will be introduced to North America in the second half of 2010 will be packaged as a sporty, 2-seat hybrid that provides a personal driving experience for North American customers.

"The Honda CR-Z will expand our lineup of hybrid vehicles and reinforce the fun-to-drive values associated with the Honda brand," said Erik Berkman, vice president of Automobile Corporate Planning and Logistics for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Beyond great styling and features, CR-Z will bring new levels of engagement and fun to customers interested a small car or a hybrid vehicle."

CR-Z will join the Insight and Civic Hybrid in the Honda hybrid lineup, each offering distinct benefits. Civic Hybrid, launched in 2003, was Honda’s first mainstream model to feature hybrid power. The 2010 Insight, introduced in March 2009, ushered in a new era of affordability for a hybrid family sedan. The CR-Z will break new ground as a sporty, hybrid coupe with unique value.

The production version of the Honda CR-Z will make its world debut at the January 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Honda fans of all sorts have cause to celebrate today with the reveal of the 2009 iteration of the CR-Z coupe. In typical Honda fashion, this CR-Z remains a concept in name and detail only. What you see here is essentially the production coupe that will go on sale in Japan next February and then arrive in North America in the Fall.

The cool scoop-like grille from the original 2007 concept has been largely carried over, with the biggest changes being a somewhat taller roof and a more upright windshield with blacked out A-pillars – concessions to the fact that real people will have to fit into the production car. On the exterior, the only elements likely to change once it hits the assembly line are the side mirrors, which will probably be a bit larger, along with the internals of the light clusters.

The good news for fans of the much-loved 1983-1991 Civic CR-X is that the CR-Z should have significantly better performance than the disappointing new Insight, a car that is geared more toward fuel economy than performance. In any case, the CR-Z coupe gets a bump in displacement up to 1.5-liter and – wait for it – a six-speed manual gearbox!

This will be the first hybrid with a row-it-yourself six-speed.Unfortunately, we probably won't hear any official numbers on the drivetrain's output or its mileage until closer to the Japanese launch, but color us excited – and you can share some of our joy by checking out the high-res image gallery below.

Tokyo Motor Show Preview: Honda

CHIBA, Japan — When it comes to hybrid cars, Honda is still looking for a car that will trump its archrival, Toyota, and its perennial best-selling Prius.

Its last couple of efforts, the Civic Hybrid and Insight, haven’t quite managed to dethrone the Prius, although each has been a modest sales success. Honda hopes to take the hybrid market in a slightly different and new direction with its latest hopeful, the CR-Z two-seat sports car, which will be introduced at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

The CR-Z concept shown in Tokyo is essentially now in production form. The car is scheduled to go on sale next spring in the United States and as early as February in Japan.

The attraction of the CR-Z, according to Honda, is high performance coupled with good fuel economy. Pricing is also an issue, but that hasn’t been announced yet. Honda promises it will be “affordable.” Figure on something costing about $25,000.

The CR-Z evokes memories of the CRX, a cult favorite of the 1980s.

The car’s designer, Takaski Nagura, said, “We want to take sporty cars in a new direction. We want to make the image healthier.”

Power comes from a 1.5-liter version of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. (The Civic and Insight use 1.3-liter systems.) Instead of the usual, boring automatic or CVT transmissions, the CR-Z will offer a 6-speed manual.

The CR-Z is the highlight of what promises to be an unusually eclectic Honda display — even by Tokyo’s traditionally whimsical standards. For the first time, because of consolidations of exhibitors at the show, Honda’s automotive products will be joined by everything else Honda makes. This is will include motorcycles, garden tillers and generators. The various motorized machines will be powered by electricity, gasoline, hydrogen and even butane.

Vehicles include the Hello! mobility device, the latest FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell prototype, a unicycle personal mobility machine called the U3-X, 2- and 4-wheel scooters and the quirky EV-N.

The EV-N is a battery-electric minicar concept, with sort of an odd retro theme – although it is difficult to relate it to anything that has come before.

Honda is also showing a concept minivan called the Skydeck. It features seating for six, a glass roof, scissor doors and an far-out interior you will likely find only at an auto show — or a Tokyo love hotel. More importantly, the Skydeck suggests a future version of an Odyssey-style minivan that could be powered by a hybrid powertrain.

Toyota FT-86 Concept Revealed Before 2009 Tokyo Motor Show

Wow, well done!
Oh how I remember the days of the Toyota Corolla AE86. The new Toyota FT-86 Concept, recently revealed to the world, actually makes me think of the AE86, not because of the body code similarities (AE86 vs. FT-86, but offering an affordable rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. It is about time Toyota offered something exciting. They have not had anything exciting since the Supra and maybe the Celica GT-S, but that’s a whole other story.

We brought you exclusive images and information of this upcoming vehicle that will be powered by a 2.0-liter boxter four cylinder engine developed in conjunction with Subaru a few months ago. Some think it will have more than the slated 160hp and be bumped up to 200hp. We suspect that the Toyota FT-86 will be light-weight to give it a decent amount of agility when it is coupled with a 6-speed manual and ADVICS brakes. I can see it now, the tuners are going to tear this car up… in a good way. Maybe Toyota will get this car out before Hyundai and others steal this segment.

Expect the Toyota FT-86 Concept to be on display in the flesh at the upcoming 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. The price is expected to be just above $20,000. Sounds like a project car that we would love to have in our garage!

2009 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: 'Near Production' Ready Honda CR-Z

One of the most highly-anticipated new model releases scheduled to debut at next month's Tokyo Motor Show would have to be the production version of Honda's CR-Z hybrid hatchback. That's not happening. Instead, we're getting a concept version of the production car. First unveiled at the Tokyo show back in 2007 in pure concept form, the sporty two-passenger CR-Z is slated for production early next year in Japan. We expect the CR-Z to hit the States sometime thereafter.

Underhood will be a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to Honda's proprietary Integrated Motor Assist technology. Also on the menu will be a six-speed manual (yes!) gearbox that will surely be a more entertaining partner for driving enthusiasts than the CVT used in the Insight hatchback.

While Honda is still calling the Tokyo-bound 2009 version of the CR-Z a concept, it's clearly one of those concept-in-name-only deals. Don't expect the attractive sheetmetal to be altered before the car hits the showroom floor, and that interior is pretty much the same one you'll be able to sample in 2010. That's fine by us – the car's wedge-shaped lines are very attractive and call to mind the seminal CRX from the early 1980s, though with a modern flavor reminiscent of the current Insight.

Honda EV-N Concept tucks U3-X personal transporter inside door

Thanks for the tip Chris!
Look, we admit it: Honda's U3-X unicycle gave us a bit of a chuckle when we first peeped the video last week. Now look at this, just look at it! Not only does the Honda EV-N Concept steal all the best retro styling from the classic Fiat 500 (or Honda 600 closer to home), it also integrates the miniscule U3-X electric transporter directly into its passenger door frame -- adding an additional 22-pounds, at least, in the process. Oh, and this little guy's electric with a solar roof panel. The EV-N will makes its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month where we hope to give it a great big hug just for showing up. A few more pics after the break, fully gallery just beyond that read link.

09 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Honda EV-N

The EV-N Concept is part of a larger display called the “HELLO!” (Honda Electric mobility Loop) display, where Honda will be showcasing a total “ecosystem” of mobility products. You have products that supply electricity, vehicles that run on electricity and products with innovative electronic technologies.
There will be solar panels that supply electricity and battery electric vehicle that emit zero emissions in use. The HELLO showcase is pretty much a preview of the potential of a low-carbon society of the future of course centered around Honda products. In addition, each HELLO! vehicle features communication technologies that showcase fun ways in which mobility devices can interact with people and society.
