Mauro Calo breaks the world record for the longest car drift

London, United Kingdom, Jun 20, 2011 - Mauro Calo proved his driving flair by breaking the world record for the longest car drift on June 19 at Mercedes-Benz World, Surrey. Mauro smashed the existing World Record by 394 metres achieving a total distance of 2308 metres to add his name to the record books and the title to his established driving career.


To achieve the record breaking distance, Mauro chose part of the Handling Circuit at Mercedes-Benz World, Weybridge Surrey. The circuit provided a complete 360 degree circle of tarmac which saw him complete almost 8 laps.

Mauro is no stranger to Mercedes-Benz World as his career as a professional driver includes working at the venue providing driving experiences to guests and also entertaining crowds with precision driving skills in the dynamic Silver Arrows Display.

New Cars - Skoda reveals new Octavia vRS & Scout

Skoda has today released the first official images of its facelifted Octavia vRS and Octavia Scout.

Following the launch of the new Octavia late last year, the vRS and Scout have now also been updated to bring them into line with the current range and family face of Škoda.

The facelifted vRS has a redesigned front grille featuring the vRS logo and bold headlamps, which for the first time can be fitted with xenon headlights combined with the adaptive front lighting system.

The car has two more completely new features: front fog lamps with optional cornering function and LED lamps for daytime lighting. The rear lights have also been redesigned to look more attractive and new 18-inch Neptune alloy wheels are available.

Other changes to the vRS include a new metallic paint, Anthracite, and a lowered (now 127mm) sports-tuned chassis. The car is also lighter – the petrol version by 20kg and the diesel by 15kg. With reduced air resistance the maximum speed of the vRS is now higher and the car’s responsiveness and acceleration have also been improved.

The vRS is available with a choice of two powerplants, a 2.0-litre TFSI 150kW (petrol) or a 2.0-litre TDI 126kW (diesel) engine both of which are available with a six-speed manual twin-clutch DSG transmission.

The new Scout has a redesigned front grille, bold headlamps and body-coloured side mouldings. The front fog lights can be fitted with the optional cornering function and the large front bumper emphasises the car’s rugged appearance. A new metallic paint, Rosso Brunello, is also available across the Octavia range.

With 179mm ground clearance and efficient chassis protection, the Octavia Scout can also handle itself off-road. The all-wheel drive system features the fourth-generation Haldex clutch, which can transfer as much as 86 per cent of the torque to a single wheel.

The Scout is available with two engine choice, a 1.8-litre TSI 119kW (petrol) and 2.0-litre TDI 104kW (diesel) combined with a six-speed mechanical transmission.

March 11, 2008 Like a number of vehicle concepts we've encountered in recent years such as the NARO Tilting Car and the VentureOne plug-in hybrid, the Lumeneo Smera aims to create a "best of both worlds" blend of car and motorcycle by combining the protection of an enclosed driver capsule with the small-footprint and maneuverability of two-wheeled transport. On debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the four-wheel, fully-electric Smera concept boasts a top speed of 80mph (130kmh), a 93 mile (150km) range on a single charge and can achieve 0-60 mph in around 8 seconds with an on-board computer automatically controlling the vehicle's tilting function to an angle of up to 25 degrees by taking into account on the turning angle, speed and road conditions.

Measuring under 8 feet in length, just 2.6 feet wide (2.4 x 0.8m) and weighing 770 lbs (350kg), the diminutive Smera is powered by two 20hp electric motors with a belt drive delivering power directly to the rear wheels. Described as a 1+1 seater (ie. two people can fit but leave the luggage at home), the zero local emissions car uses a lithium ion battery pack which can be recharged via a conventional mains outlet.

Inside the Smera features leather upholstery with an LCD information screen with the vehicle's tall stance ensuring that the driver wont get lost in city traffic.

French manufacturer Lumeneo is expected to bring the Smera to market next year but no word on price as yet.
