2011 Mercedes E350 BlueTec Diesel

At first glance, the 2011 E350 BlueTec looks like just another mid-sized diesel car from Mercedes-Benz. Nothing special, right?

FAST FACTS

1. Powering the E350 BlueTec is a 3.0L turbo-diesel that makes 210-hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.2. Acceleration is rated at 6.7 seconds to 60-mph with fuel economy of 22/33-mpg (city/hwy).
3. The diesel-powered Benz starts at $50,900; a $1,400 increase over the gas-powered E350.
4. Mercedes is planning to deliver more diesel models in the U.S., including a diesel C-Class and GLK.

Well, considering that the company is now celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founders creation of the automobile, and that Benz has a history with diesel engines in production vehicles dating back nearly a century, it’s worth a second look.
A modern ‘E’ is so far removed from the 1936 260 D, but there’s plenty of spirit and smart engineering in both to keep that familial link alive.

BLUETEC DIESEL: POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT

At the heart of the E350 BlueTec is a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that – true to form – produces adequate horsepower and monster torque: 210-hp and 400 lb-ft respectively. Combined with the short gearing in the seven-speed automatic transmission, this Benz just flat-out scoots, hitting 60 mph from a stop in 6.7 seconds.
The electronic assists work hard to keep the rear wheels from peeling out, especially since the torque peaks at only 1,600 rpm. Floor it, feel the gearbox drop a couple – or three! – ratios, and it’s just a quiet, refined shot of power. The gears slur from one to the next with no real sense of change, unless you choose Sport mode where things are programmed to deliver slightly more feedback.
For those wondering if the BlueTec is a smelly, noisy mess, the answer is no. The engine is 50-state certified for emissions, and in the E350 provides fuel economy ratings of 22-mpg in the city and 33-mpg on the highway. That’s a massive leap forward from the gas-powered model, which only gets 17/24-mpg. With the 21 gallon fuel tank, the BlueTec has a potential range of over 600 miles between fill-ups.

BUT THERE’S A CATCH

The only complication is Mercedes-Benz’ reliance on urea injection into the exhaust – known as AdBlue – which does require topping up with almost every oil change to keep the NOx emissions low. While not horrendously expensive, it is another regular cost to consider above and beyond the maintenance costs compared to a gasoline-powered equivalent.
Regardless, the E350’s extra costs might be swept away after experiencing one yourself. The E-Class sedan is the segment leader in style and poise. The modern, sculpted shape is designed to cut through the air more efficiently, hiding a well-engineered platform with an independent suspension all around that’s adjustable for firmness. The brakes are well sized to bring the 4,059-lb. sedan to heel quickly, while standard 17-inch wheels with 45-series all-season tires do an adequate job of translating the driver’s demands to the pavement.
Visually, every E-Class can be ordered in either traditional Luxury trim with a four-slat grille and a monochrome interior highlighted by Burl Walnut, or with a no-charge Sport package that adds cross-drilled front brake discs hiding behind different 17-inch wheels, a three-bar grille, LED running lights, and a two-tone interior with aluminum accents. Regardless of which you choose, all BlueTec models come with LED taillights, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals and dual exhaust.

ATTRACTIVELY PRICED

The standard interior features include 14-way front seats with memory, power windows and locks, dual-zone climate control, a glass moon-roof, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and phone functions integrated into the face, an eight-speaker sound system with a seven-inch screen, and Bluetooth hands-free. That’s pretty decent equipment for a mid-range model that starts at $50,900, but Mercedes-Benz loves when people spend money on options and personalization.
Two Premium packages carry most everything you could imagine. The first includes hard-drive-based navigation, a harmon/kardon HD sound system with a 6GB music box, a rear-view camera, power rear sunshade and heated seats for $4K.
The second – and you’re required to buy the first to get the second – adds an electronic trunk closer, active bi-xenon headlights with washers, LED running lights, and keyless ignition for another $2,500.
There’s also a Driver Assistance Package with nearly $3,000 worth of electronic nannies like radar-based cruise control, blind-spot assist and a system that keeps you in your driving lane. Other standalone options run the gamut from a panoramic sunroof, automatic parking, and a night-vision front camera, to a massaging driver's seat and rear side airbags.
For now, the E350 BlueTec has the advantage of being the only mid-sized luxury car available with a diesel engine. Both the BMW 5-Series and new Audi A6 will be available as hybrids in North America, but the derv-burners are staying in Europe. Expect the new Lexus GS to follow suit in the next year too. The current GS does offer a hybrid option with similar power and fuel economy, but the rest of the package is dated.

THE VERDICT

Like all E Classes, the 350 BlueTec hits the sweet spot for power, features and luxury but now adds fantastic fuel efficiency too. If they only slapped that turbo-diesel into an E-Class Wagon, Mercedes-Benz would have the ultimate road-trip machine.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Gets Longer Fangs and Longer Range

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

When it comes to premium compact German super sedans, the BMW M3has ruled the roost pretty much since Day 1 (even though the first four-door production M3 didn’t arrive until the second-generation E36 M3 arrived). Try as they might, with differing formulas, Audi and Mercedes-Benz haven’t quite been able unseat the Bavarian buzzbomb at the top of most casual enthusiasts’ consciousnesses.

This is not to say, however, that the pretenders to the M3’s throne are bad cars. Far from it, in fact. Take the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG: It’s got a booming 6.2L V8 that serves up a metric cornucopia of muscle and an exhaust note that's equal parts Andrea Bocelli and atom bomb. Match that up with a tarmac-strangling stance and you have a grin-inducing one-two performance punch. And for model year 2012, it’s found multiple ways to make your smile wider still.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Visual changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary, since it still rides on the same W204 platform of the original C63 AMG. The headlights, hood and grille have been reshaped slightly, and the front fascia features new mesh-grilled openings for engine and brake cooling. You also get deeper side skirts, rear lip spoiler and a more aggressively-styled rear bumper with a diffuser and cutouts for the quad exhaust tips. The C63 AMG rolls on 18” AMG wheels finished in Titanium Gray and wearing high-performance tires.

Of course, the bigger news is under the skin. The aforementioned handbuilt V8’s output is unchanged (451hp in standard form, 481hp with the optional AMG Development Package and 443 lb.-ft in both trims), but the transmission to which it’s connected is new. The C63 AMG now utilizes theAMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed automatic transmission, which uses a wet multiplate clutch instead of a torque converter to act as the mediator between engine and gearbox. The net result is improved response and, more importantly in times like these, a claimed 10% increase in fuel economy. Put that in your “medicinal” pipe and smoke it, Sierra Club.

But what about the important numbers? Well, for starters, 0-60 mph happens in just 4.4 seconds (4.3 with the Development Package). More interested in terminal velocity? You’ll be happy to know that it’s 155 mphfor the standard version, and 174 mph for the upgraded version. For a four-door sedan that seats four normal-sized people (five in a pinch) and has a trunk big enough to blow a couple tax refund checks at BevMo!, that’s nothing to sneeze at. But even if you do have to evacuate your sinuses, the sophisticated COMMAND Online infotainment system probably has a function that detects rapid nasal pressure discharge and issues a matter-of-fact “Gesundheit!” from the digitally captured voice of a native speaker. Or maybe it just shows you a 3D representation of your present location. We’re cool with either.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

After receiving the invitation to drive the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL V-8 variants, we immediately began talking about the big coupes in terms of a comparison test. But we ran into a significant issue: There’s nothing to compare a CL against. In practice, the CL is little more than a two-door S-Class, making it the equivalent of a BMW 7 Series Coupe, or a two-door Audi A8. Trouble is, those last two cars don’t exist.
What about at the other end of the spectrum? You could argue that the Maserati GranTurismo is little more than a Duoporte, though the two-door Maser is much lighter than the big Merc and much more focused on sport than heartbeat-slowing luxury. There’s also the 612 Scaglietti, the four-seat Ferarri, though these days they’re rarer than unicorns, especially when it comes to press fleets. The most logical choice, then, is the upcoming second-generation Bentley Continental GT. Emphasis on upcoming.
For the moment, it seems the CL is without competitive peer. The question then becomes: Does the CL matter? When a car occupies such a unique niche in the market place, pointing out the highs and lows becomes moot, because interested customers will buy them anyhow. After all, where’s the competition? By the by, Mercedes-Benz claims that the demographic buying its biggest coupe is about as special as the car: men between the ages of 50 to 60 who earn between $600,000 and a million bucks a year. Thanks to FOX News, this is now called the Juan Williams demographic.
I’m going to argue that the CL is an important story to tell for a couple of reasons. One is that big Mercedes coupes represent Reaganomics at work. The high-dollar, cutting-edge technology that the aforementioned rich dudes pay through the nose for eventually trickles down to the rest of the three-pointed star lineup. In some cases, all cars everywhere benefit. Take electronic stability control. First introduced in the 1995 S600, it’s now a federally mandated safety item. Another reason for CL relevancy is that the new V-8 engines found in the CL550 4MATIC and CL63 AMG will make their way down to lesser (or at least less expensive) Benzes. In fact, the S63 already features the new motor. Then, of course, there’s my favorite reason: The B-pillarless CL is just a magnificent automobile.

2012 Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG

2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-front-three-quartersMercedes gave up building mere automobiles a long time ago. The current obsession is building ground-bound rolling rockets like its latest offering, the 2012 CLS63 AMG. Not only does it have the thrust to reach orbit, but also the looks to impress any advanced civilization.
The original CLS defined the modern 4-door coupe concept with its release in 2004. The 2012 CLS63 sharpens the aesthetics but is more of an evolution of the same design, with most improvements under the skin. The design team at AMG focused on efficiency as much as performance improvement, but when we are talking about Mercedes, more power always seems to creep in. The CLS63, which was powered by an almost appropriately sized 6.2-liter V8, is now powered by a completely non sequitur 5.5-liter direct injection twin turbo V8. The M157 engine is actually 33 percent more fuel efficient than the previous unit while producing an extra 43 hp and 85 lb-ft of torque, bringing numbers up to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft with the optional Performance Package. With those kinds of numbers Mercedes could call it the CLSuzan and no one would care.
2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-rear2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-cockpit
Leaning away from the industry trend of dual-clutch transmissions, AMG has chosen the Speedshift MCT seven-speed unit first used on the SL63. It replaces a traditional torque convertor with an electronically controlled wet clutch. The transmission has four modes of operation: Sport, Sport+, Manual, and Controlled Efficiency. In Sport+, Race Start function provides launch control. Controlled Efficiency employs a start/stop function to increase fuel mileage.
The CLS63′s suspension has been updated to match the new power output. The steering system now utilizes a variable assist feature that not only increases steering response and comfort, but also increases efficiency by only operating at the level needed. Adjustable ride height and variable damping allow the driver to select from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes at the touch of a button. All of these options add up to a car that can be tailored to the driver’s taste and needs.
