Honda Tuning: 1985 Honda CRX SI

Ah, Honda's glory days.... what a fun car....
1985 Honda CRX SI - CRX Memoirs
Although the first-generation CRX had been formally introduced during the 1984 model year, when Honda unveiled the Si model just 12 months later, enthusiasts realized that the brand’s little, performance-minded hatchback was better in almost every way.
From the June, 2011 issue of Honda Tuning
By Aaron Bonk

Thank the mid-’80’s mini-truck clubs for Honda performance as you know itcarefully tailored mullets, Ray-Ban Aviators, pegged jeans, and all. When you’re done, thank the ’85 CRX Si too. By 1985, mini-trucks were arguably a prevailing force among boy enthusiasts who denied more predictable domestic cars. As expected, testosterone-charged arcade meet-ups lost their luster as mini-truck clubs soon sought a more balanced male-to-female ratio. The fairer sex added an interesting and unexpected element to the equation thougharriving at events in smaller, easier to maneuver Ford Escorts, Volkswagen Rabbits, Nissan Sentras, Toyota MR2s, even Honda CRXs. Discriminating, newly enlightened mini-truckers traded their trucks for hatchbacksso many so that by 1989 Mini-Truckin’ magazine, for example, had a compact performance following so large it spawned the first-ever publication catering to sport compact enthusiasts: Sport Compact Car magazine. Sport Compact Car’s editors would later create Honda Tuning.
Honda’s CRX wasn’t the first sport compact enthusiasts cared about. Volkswagen’s early-’80’s Rabbit GTI overwhelmed much of the competition within a market that, frankly, had little rivalry. Although the first-generation CRX had been formally introduced during the 1984 model year, when Honda unveiled the Si model just 12 months later, enthusiasts realized that the brand’s little, performance-minded hatchback was better in almost every way.

American Honda had a difficult time convincing Honda of Japan to make the CRX available to U.S. consumers. The two-seater was designed for the world market, not Americans. Its essence was aimed toward young, economically conscious, city-dwelling Japanese who grappled with big-city traffic and nonsensical parking. Americans, who Honda’s analysts were convinced bought cars for legroom and impressive cubic-inch counts, were not who the company initially considered as viable consumers. Of course, American Honda was given the go-ahead and, from its first sales brochure and its first commercial, did something nobody expectedit solicited Honda’s all-new sport compact for exactly what it wasa sports car. This should come as no surprise; the Si acronym stands for Sport Injected after all. The media immediately pitted the angular-shaped, two-seater CRX against the GTI and MR2. The CRX delivered. Later, Honda’s CRX made Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list in 1985, among other accolades, like earning Motor Trend magazine’s Import Car of the Millennium title in 1990. Road & Track magazine went on to say that the Si had the sprit of an exotic.

Astute enthusiasts appreciated the high-revving Si’s modern fuel injection, taut suspension, precise steering, and ample braking, yet were left jaundiced by the fact that America never received the higher-output 1.6-liter, DOHC version the rest of the world had. To ensure exclusivity to the much-anticipated Acura brand that would launch later that year, and to the chagrin of CRX enthusiasts, twin-cam D-series engines were reserved solely for the upper echelon nameplate’s entry-level compact, the Integra. None of this mattered, though. Every CRX American Honda received sold.

CarScoop: Sneak Preview: Fortune Motorsports' SEMA-Bound Honda CR-Z

It's time for the tuning aficionados over at Fortune Motorsports to give us our first look at their customized Honda CR-Z that will be officially revealed at next week's SEMA Show. Even though this here picture is a computer generated rendering, the tuner claims its "almost 100% accurate" to what we'll see displayed on the floors of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The build incorporates a bodykit with front and rear spoilers, side skirts and race-like mirrors, as well as a carbon fiber hood and larger alloy wheels shod in low profile tires. The photo also reveals a lowered suspension and a pair of body-hugging bucket seats from Zeal.
Still no word if the tuner has fiddled around with the CR-Z's gasoline-electric hybrid system.

AMS Terra Brings the Space Invader Theme to Honda's CR-Z Hybrid Coupe

This is AMS's take on the new Honda CR-Z hybrid sports coupe/hatch, and it's called the Terra. The CR-Z, which already looks nice as a cute little sporty hybrid, has been dropped on 19-inch RAYS Versus Torismo Rechente one-off rollers that have been finished in piano black and pearl white.

The front of the car gets a new front bumper - with or without a license plate holder- and some "eyeline garnish", while both front and rear fenders have been widened (15 mm and 70 mm, respectively). Also, the side sills get their WIDE on to the tune of 30 mm.

Up above, there's a roof lip and rear hatch spoiler. The rear of the car is where the magic really happens, though: the Terra gets an alien-inspired rear diffuser with twin center exhaust outlets for the sports muffler.

Although the performance of the car hardly requires such aggressive and excessive styling, it's nice to see people at least taking a stab at it.

Interested in taking your sporty hybrid to the next visual level? Expect a full painted kit (including exhaust bezels and the diffuser-mounted tail light) to run well north of $5,000.

Tommy Kaira Makes the Honda Insight Hybrid a Little Bit More Interesting to Look at

Looks nice....
The new Honda Insight hybrid is one of those vehicles that makes us wonder if the team responsible for its styling fell asleep during the design stage. Tommy Kaira has tried to address this "problem" by developing a new sport package for the Japanese hybrid.

The tuner's offerings includes an aero kit that is also available in carbon-fiber trim and comprises of a front spoiler, a new grille, side skirts and a rear apron with an integrated diffuser that can optionally house four tail-pipes for an all-show, no-go appearance.

The package can be rounded off with new 15- or 16-inch alloy wheels, a sport suspension that lowers the car by 30 to 35mm and various other accessories and parts such as sport seats, sill plates etc.

Huh? JDM Honda Odyssey Tricked Out as a BMW

Ah yes, the things people do....
Needless to say, this Japanese domestic market Honda Odyssey isn't your typical soccer-mom's minivan. Besides the insane negative camber all around and the fact that in parking position, the Odyssey sits only about an inch or two away from the road, what makes this custom creation stand out from the crowd is that the designer managed to incorporate the front-end of an E92 BMW 3-Series Coupe. Oddly enough, the bimmer nose seems to work nice...

Civic Nation Microsite: Mix your own Anthem

Honda tunes into Civic Nation via anthem mix-off
Honda is rallying its peeps around a major Civic Nation mix-off in an effort to re-energize its Civic brand with younger demos. Leveraging the "United We Drive" campaign, which was first launched by Honda four years ago, the latest national program has a new spin - literally - by inviting Civic fans to create an "Anthem for the Nation" on a newly created sound track mixer from samples developed by local hip hop celeb Saukrates.

With media buys helmed by the brand's long-time agency PHD, and creative helmed by Toronto-based Grip, the new campaign spans TV, online, radio and out-of-home elements all designed to drive its target 18- to 34-year-old demo to the microsite. There, a mixer complete with a timeline scrubber and sync pads invites users to create a 30-second track from a choice of categories - Electronica, Hip Hop or Electro Pop.

The mixer engages users by allowing them to pull in different loops of instruments - percussion, organ, bass and strings - before publishing them to the site to garner votes. The anthem with top votes from the Civic Nation mix-off wins the prize: airing for two weeks as the intro to DJ megastar Starting from Scratch's show on the Traffic Flow MixShow on Flow 93.5 - a radio station with a highly urban and multicultural demo.

"Scratch is probably the most famous DJ in Canada," Ravi Dindayal, director, interactive at Grip tells MiC. "He has a very diverse audience and Civic is a very multicultural brand. We thought that the show was big enough to create a strong enough incentive."

To help users gain more votes (and tip off the viral aspect of the contest), Grip has also created a piece of player code that acts like an ad to the track, available on the microsite, that users can cut and post to their blog, on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. Over 250 songs have been created over the past three weeks, and the site has received over 30,000 unique hits according to Google Analytics. "We tried to build as many social hooks as possible," notes Dindayal.

Honda Tuning: 1965 Honda S600 Roadster - Vintage Level

Piecing Together Honda's History
By Rodrez
Photography by Rodrez
Scott King's '65 S600 Roadster & S600 Coupe
As most Honda enthusiasts know, in 1999 Honda introduced the S2000 convertible in celebration of their 50th anniversary. The sporty roadster created a worldwide buzz, with many calling it an instant classic. What many don't know is that Honda had already created a topless roadster, some 35 years earlier.

In the late '50s, it was the Japanese government that dictated which companies would be allowed to produce cars, as well as what types of cars they'd be able to build. Rather than compete with current automakers' model types, Soichiro Honda set out to create a car that would inspire a new demand for something different. His theory would prove invaluable, as it caused quite a stir when the S360 was finally introduced to Japanese dealers. Usually reserved for emergency vehicles, the new offering was unveiled in a bright red hue that demanded attention. Though the S360 was never put into production, its predecessor, the S500, was available for purchase in Japan. In 1964, the S600 Roadster went into full production, and was made available in Europe, Australia, and Canada. As with many great Hondas, the U.S. market would never see the S600.

The S600 Roadster
Scott King of Palm Springs, CA, has always been a Honda fan. In fact, his first car, a '72 N600, was one of the first Hondas ever available in the U.S. "When I was just a kid, my older brother's friend Greg spent a dollar on a raffle ticket and was the lucky winner of a brand new yellow N600. I was always fascinated by that car and continue to be to this day," he recalls. In May of 1995, King received word from a friend that a 1965 S600, in dire need of a full restoration, was calling his name from Pennsylvania. Most likely a Canadian model due to the left hand drive configuration, the car was quickly purchased, and it, along with all of its miscellaneous pieces strewn about in various sized boxes, was shipped to a friend's shop in New York. After some slight adjustments, the car fired up on the first try, even after being stored for over fourteen years. The car was shipped home to California where it would spend the next four years being painstakingly brought back to showroom condition. Parts had to be sourced through Honda gurus and newfound "S" friends that might offer a piece here, or a part there. In order to get into every nook and cranny, the chassis was separated from the body for the rebuild. Koni adjustable shocks replaced the outdated stockers, and while the body received a fresh white coat, the entire frame was expertly powdercoated.

With the exterior up to par, attention was turned to the daunting task of completing the interior. A previous owner had re-covered most of the cabin, and King felt that a red interior was the only option for this classic Honda. Right hand drive S600 dashes are scarce, and left hand drive S600 dashes are essentially non-existent. A specialist was hired to recreate the original dash and preserve the car's authentic feel. In late 2002, after years of searching, waiting, and countless hours of wrenching, King's '65 S600 was finally complete, and ready for the road. He adds "It's really hard to believe that this was once just a rusty heap. I had a lot of fun and frustration restoring the car, made a lot of new friends and learned many new things. But to be honest, I wouldn't say I was itching to start a similar project any time soon." Famous last words.
