SEMA 2009: Mugen-fettled Accord, Fit aren't the big Honda story from SEMA

Interesting....
In addition to announcing its plans to reinvigorate its participation in grassroots racing, Honda revealed two Mugen-accessorized models -- a 2010 Accord Sedan and Fit -- each outfitted with a range of parts available at dealers, but not a standalone model, ala Mugen Civic. While the 18-inch chrome wheels, front grille, spoilers, floor mats and machined aluminum oil filler cap are attractive additions to Honda's growing HFP line, needless to say, they leave us a bit cold when it comes the automaker's commitment to the aftermarket and, more to the point, performance.

Uninspiring SEMA efforts aside, the real news came last night during a meeting with Honda execs, where we were able to glean a few more details about Honda's future performance plans, how the CR-Z -- and more to the point, hybrids -- fit in and something to look out for next year.

Honda PR man Chuck Schifsky, told us that the Big H plans to use hybrids as a performance booster in the future, saying, "The CR-Z isn't the last step. It's the beginning." Although the real start of Honda's performance-marketed hybrids began with the last generation Accord Hybrid, Schifsky admits that its introduction was "ahead of its time," one of many reasons the electric-assisted sedan never quite caught on with consumers.

More interestingly, several Honda heads told us to expect something big in the world of motorsports next year -- likely in Japan. What that means is open to interpretation, but with Honda pulling its NSX out of SuperGT for 2010 (due to the front-engine, rear-drive chassis requirements), something interesting could be on the way. NSX revival? Lexus LFA fighter? Consider our interest extremely piqued...

Honda Civic Type R MUGEN Confirmed for UK at £38,599 OTR

British tuners Mugen Euro will build up to 20 units of Honda Civic Type R Mugen, a "road-legal super hatch." The car will receive 240PS from the 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine, a 20% gain over the untuned version.

"Each Type R MUGEN will be an exclusive, hand-built race car for the road," said Mugen Euro VP Hiroki Toyoda. "When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes. Given the interest we have already had from car enthusiasts in the UK and abroad, we hope to repeat that achievement."

The car will be hand-built in the U.K., with engineers installing new camshafts, pistons, intake, and exhaust. The car has a limited slip differential, a nice feature for some of Great Britain's windier roads. Forged alloy wheels weigh only 7.85 kilograms per wheel, and cover four-piston racing caliper brakes. The company wrapped the wheels in "track-ready road-legal" tires.

Each Type R Mugen will be coated in Championship White, Honda's racing color. Exterior features include a new rear wing, and composite front and rear skirts. A custom grille, with Mugen badge, was also installed. Inside, Recaro seats were used for the driver and front passenger, while the rear seat bench was stripped out altogether.

To get your hands on one of these cars, prepare to spend £38,599. That price includes taxes, fees, and paperwork. You can read more about the Honda Civic Type R Mugen in the press release below.

Mugen Kit for 2010 Honda Insight

Yes, Mugen ALSO propose some pretty nice kit for the latest Hybrid wonder from Honda, and NO this kit does not include any mechanical part in order to boost up our Insight, which make quite some sense here since the ultimate goal behind the concept of an Hybrid car is to lower your consumption, but here Mugen completely reworked out Insight Cd (Coefficient Drag), in order to offer the minimum resistance possible and to ultimately give the Insight a better MPG ratio…

Coming from another Japanese tuner could make you wonder if this will really effect the Insight MPG, but here we are not talking about ANY tuner, we are talking about Mugen, which has YEARS of knowledge and experience in the racing world and if they announced that their kit will drastically improved the Insight Cd, we have to believe them.
