For many, the modern definition of a Land Rover is the high-roofed SUV you see here, not necessarily the solid-axled mud-plugger that, in its current configuration, is sold nearly everywhere other than North America as a Defender.

But that doesn’t mean that these two vehicles don’t have a few things in common, as we learned a few months ago on some of the continent’s most difficult trails in the San Juan range in Southwestern Colorado.

To see if the latest Land Rover LR4 is as well-suited to cruising the streets of Boulder as it is to climbing over boulders, we sampled a 2011 Land Rover LR4 HSE for a decidedly on-road experience.
