MINI UK Launches New Soho Editions

Following the release of the MINI Clubman Soho edition last year, the British automaker decided to name all of its special edition models after London boroughs, districts, streets and landmarks.

As a result, the Soho nameplate has now been applied to the three-door hatchback and soft-top convertible model, both of which will be available in the United Kingdom in Cooper and Cooper D models from now until March 2012.
The Soho editions sport an exclusive ‘White Silver’ metallic paint, which is not available on any other current MINI Hatch or Convertible model, as well as 17-inch Black Star Bullet alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with black interior reflectors and white indicators.
As for the interior, the two MINI Soho models gain Anthracite headlining, a 3-Spoke sport leather steering wheel and ‘Piano Black’ interior surfaces.

Tuned Dodge Viper ACR vs Koenigsegg CCXR

The Dodge Viper ACR is one of the fastest production cars around packing an 8.4-liter V10 with 600HP and 560 lb/ft (760 Nm) of torque that allows it to accelerate from 0-60 mph (96km/h) in less than 4.0 seconds. It has also proved its mettle by breaking lap records in famous and difficult tracks such as Laguna Seca and the Nürburgring.
But it's one thing going against a Corvette and totally different story when you're challenged by the likes of Koenigsegg and its CCXR that boasts a twin-supercharged V8 delivering close to 1,100-horsepower.
The Dodge Viper ACR you're about to see, however, has one more trick under its sleeve as this snake had been enhanced with a Paxton supercharger that gives it another 150 horses.

Since its launch, the Mazda RX8 has been the subject of close scrutiny by enthusiasts. The high level of attention is not only due to the car's admirable driving dynamics but, in part to the early reports of below-than-expected performance. To be more specific: wheel horsepower measured on several chassis dynamometer runs resulted in values well below the expected 17%~20% drivetrain parasitic losses. And quarter mile runs of anywhere between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds off of those produced by magazines on allegedly pre-production vehicles.

In connection with the RX8's horsepower rating: the original marketing material from Mazda North America (MNAO) advertised the 6 speed manual transmission RX8 at 247hp @ 8,500rpm. Assuming parasitic drivetrain loses between 17%-20% -common for modern rear wheel drive vehicles, a stock RX8 should measure between 205~197 horsepower at the rear wheels (rwhp) -depending on elevation, barometric pressure, temperature and correction factors applied. Instead, a stock RX8 chassis dyno run shows results ranging anywhere from mid-high ~160 to ~185rwhp. Such readings would represent parasitic drivetrain loses in excess of 25%. To say that, it is unacceptable to experience such a high level of loss through the drivetrain of a "sports car" with a carbon fiber drive shaft -amongst other things- is an understatement.

To further consolidate doubts about the actual power output of the new Renesis, several owners were unable to reproduce mid-low 14 second quarter mile passes -as seen published by well known U.S. car magazines. Low trap speeds were another hint towards the apparent lack of power output.

Shortly after, several debates on online enthusiast forums and discussion boards turned into heated arguments as to what was causing such poor "straight line performance." Many former Miata owners remembered a previous "snafu" in Mazda's history, when the manufacturer admittedly overstated the horsepower figures of their redesigned Mazda Miata.

REPORT: Mercedes-Benz secretly axes the SL 65 AMG super roadster

A recent report indicates Mercedes-Benz execs have quietly decided to discontinue the SL 65 AMG variant from the portfolio of the Affalterbach-established tuner after the SL 600 was also mysteriously killed off weeks ago. Many speculate this radical move has to do with premiere of the new SL-Class sometime in 2012 and shows a repositioning towards the use of powerful, but thirsty V12 engine for the next generation of models. It could possibly mean we won't see a new SL 65 AMG in the future, but lately Mercedes-Benz has not refuted the rumored plans pointing out the intention to build an entirely novel 12-cylinder powerplant that could spawn at least 550 hp in standard form, for the 600 versions. This also brings some hope for a newly-engineered AMG V12 unit which might boast around 650 hp-700 hp if it comes out in the end. Anyway, now we are left solely with the limited series SL 65 AMG Black Series and perhaps the BRABUS, Lorinser, Carlsson & Co. tuned SLs to quench the will to drive a magnicifent V12-powered open-top. Hope those will still live on for a while until the new SL arrives.

REPORT: Mercedes-Benz on the trail of becoming leader of the premium segment

In a recent interview, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, head of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz Cars, expressed his desire that one day, in the near future, Mercedes-Benz would reach the needed sales level as to become the No.1 premium car constructor in the world. He is reported to have sent an official letter to company employees generally explaining them the current situation and the neccesary action that must be carried out immediately to begin the long expedition to the top: [...]“Some of our competitors are now growing faster and more profitably than we are. Granted, those are just snapshots in time and should not be overestimated. After all, many of our best new products are yet to come. We can’t be content to be in a solid second or even third place. We are Daimler – we should be far ahead of the pack! And if it requires something we don’t have, we’ll identify and develop it.”[...], Zetsche stated. Although Mercedes-Benz posted increased volumes in the last months and the highest Q2 profit in history, the Stuttgart-based carmaker still falls well behind the two main contenders: BMW on pole position with 689,861 sold models and Audi on 2nd with 652,970 units compared to Mercedes-Benz' 610,531 delivered in the first six months of 2011.
