December 5, 2007 The reaction to Piaggio's MP3 carving 3-wheeler has been little short of sensational around the world - the lithe, feisty scooter is opening up a whole new category of vehicles. While the MP3 is something of a learner package, however, the people it's really been impressing are the seasoned bikers, who are in awe of its amazing front-end traction, stability, flickability and the sheer, unbridled fun factor you get from riding it. So you can understand our excitement when Piaggio announced today that a beefed-up 500cc version of the same platform was about to hit the streets, complete with a sportier suspension package that might just let you ride it as hard as it begs to be ridden.

It may not have the outright speed, street cred or ground clearance of a modern sportsbike, but the Fuoco will probably stop harder than anything on two wheels with its two fat contact patches up front, and the cornering ability and sheer giggle factor of these plucky three-wheelers has to be experienced to be believed.

February 26, 2008 The Ducati legend continues to grow, and the latest chapter is again inspirational stuff. Ducati debuted its 1098 R Superbike in Qatar at the first round of the World Superbike Championship on the weekend, heralding the arrival of this truly landmark roadgoing motorcycle with a 1-2 victory administered by Troy Bayliss and Max Biaggi. The new 1098-based Ducati superbikes are, due to technical regulations, very similar to the US$47,000 roadgoing 1098R because they had to be, complete with eight stage competition-level traction control (absolutely identical to that used by Stoner), elliptical throttle bodies, suspension, brakes, wheels, slipper clutch, twin injectors and information-rich instrumentation all lifted straight from the World Championship-winning Desmosedici GP7. The bike uses the 180hp L-Twin Testastretta Evoluzione engine in a trellis chassis that tips the scales at a lightweight 165kg (364lbs) – regardless of price, the bike is as close to a genuine winning world superbike as you’re ever likely to get.

Ducati is claiming the 1098 R is the “most advanced, most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle ever built, with the highest torque-to-weight ratio in the sport bike category” – given the illustrious history of the twin, that’s a big claim, but entirely appropriate. Indeed, with the DTC system, the 1098R may well lay claim to the title of the most advanced roadgoing motorcycle ever built.

Apart from its $100,000 brethren, the Desmosedici MotoGP replica, the 1098R is certainly the roadgoing bike with the most direct MotoGP technology – the bike is the first available with true traction control, but the DTC is just one aspect of the bike’s race tech heritage – all the carbon fibre bits are already there, plus the simple MotoGP digital dash – the whole thing is operated with one switch which scrolls through the numerous display options – from straight digital to a mixture of analog and digital, you can make your own dash layout. If computer analysis is part of your thing, the bike is equipped with Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) and stores all the data onto a thumbnail drive which can be swapped straight into a laptop when your session finishes.

The bike bristles with exotic race gear, and the suspension is even more special than normal in several ways – for starters, ride height is adjustable independent of suspension settings (the mechanism is straight from MotoGP), and secondly, the Twin Tube rear Ohlins (the front forks are TiN-coated 43mm Ohlins upside-down units) shocker is the first to offer rebound and compression damping adjustment that is entirely independent. On other shockers, changing one slightly changes the other. The Brembo brakes are also premium items.

When launched in November 2006, the 1098 and 1098 S introduced a number of ‘firsts’ for Ducati and production sport bike design. It was the first production motorcycle to have the amazing stopping power of Brembo Monobloc brakes, the first to have a data acquisition system integrated as standard equipment and the first to use an ingenious construction method for its weight-saving single-sided swingarm. More ‘firsts’ for a road-going Ducati included the direct application of MotoGP technology, like the power producing GP6-derived elliptical throttle bodies and the use of the information-rich instrumentation originally developed for the World Championship-winning Desmosedici GP7.

The ‘R’ version of the 1098 is not only the flagship of the Superbike family, but also the platform on which the very latest Ducati Corse technologies are expressed in street bike form. The 1098 R takes all the original 1098 features, reduces weight even further and adds an extra 20 horsepower, traction control, sand-cast crankcases, titanium valves and con-rods, TTXR rear suspension and much more to produce the most awesome performance ever seen in this category.

The 1098 R comes with a race kit, which is intended for track use only, boosting power output from 180 bhp standard to approximately 186 bhp. The kit consists of a 102dB carbon fibre slip-on muffler kit by Termignoni and a dedicated ECU.

The ECU not only has reconfigured mapping to suit the racing mufflers, but also initiates the system dialogue that controls the DTC (Ducati Traction Control) system. The 1098 R is the first ever production bike to be fitted with a true competition-level traction control and it’s by far the most advanced traction system in existence.

Though Magneti Marelli is the company’s electronics partner in the project, the software for the DTC is Ducati-developed and its competitive advantage is well guarded with encryption. The software is downloaded to blank ECUs in the Bologna factory prior to fitting to the bikes. The system uses front and rear wheel sensors plus software to hook up an eight-stage intervention package – monitoring wheel speed, throttle opening, gear and engine revs, the system advances and retards the ignition and selectively cuts the spark to give exactly the right amount of torque to give the targeted degree of traction. Sounds complex? It is, because its currently the best solution available for getting the most power on the road that exists, let alone that you can buy.

To buy a bike with a traction control system, you simply buy a Desmosedici RR or the 1098R – they’re the only two bikes with such a system available anywhere – it’s an easy choice because the entire production of 1500 RRs has been sold – if you don’t have one, the 1098R is your only chance, at least for the moment. Once you have a 1098R, you need to fit the race ECU at which point the digital dashboard gets an extra menu or two for the settings for the DTC and you’re in business.

In the event itself, Bayliss as one of Ducati’s favourite sons, was more aware of the significance of the win than most. It’s the third generation of V-twin Ducati he has won a World Championship race on – he’s won the title on the 996, then the 999, plus he also won on the team’s inaugural MotoGP machine. At several points in the race Bayliss appeared to have dropped from contention, but each time he rode the wheels off his machine to get it back to the lead, finally getting past Max Biaggi with just a few corners to go.

In the second race of the Superbikes (each round has two races), Suzuki’s Fonsi Neito took his first WSBK win on a Suzuki GSX-R, with Ducatis second through fourth – the points tally at the end of the weekend sees Ducati 1098R machinery in six of the top ten placings.

November 26, 2007 With a style unlike anything that’s come before it, the EV-X7 is an electric streetbike with a 92mph top speed and a range of up to 110 miles. It looks like it runs some sort of hub-centre steering arrangement, and the prototype is now on display in Japan. Axle Group, the makers of the bike, will release a US$2100 mini-scooter using similar technology in the next 12 months.

While 92mph represents quite decent performance for a zero-emissions, electric vehicle, we’re sure if you thrashed this oddball motorcycle along at that sort of speed for any length of time, the battery range would be closer to 25 miles than 110. Seems to us the EV-X7 isn’t fitted with the same sort of battery management hardware found in the Vectrix maxi-scooter, which limits top speed in order to preserve battery range.

Husqvarna reveals solar electric hybrid robot lawn mower

Husqvarna has unveiled a new version of its Automower™ that not only allows you to maintain a neatly trimmed lawn without lifting a finger, but achieves it using combination of solar power and electricity. Like its fully-electric predecessor, the Automower Solar Hybrid works by cutting the grass with small blades in an irregular pattern within an area defined by a pre-laid boundary cable that ensures the mower wont turn your flowering garden beds into mulch. According to Husqvarna the new Automower only uses the energy of a standard light bulb, and to ensure it remains green even at the end of its life-span, it is constructed from 90% recyclable material.

The Automower can also self-navigate to its charging/base station using the boundary cable as a guide and the use of small blades combined with the irregular cutting pattern provides a fine mulch that acts as a lawn fertilizer and eliminates the need for raking. The Automower is also weather proof and features an in-built theft protection system that requires a personal 4-digit code to be entered before the unit will operate.

"This will take Automower to the next level with higher performance and further reduced environmental impact” says Bengt Andersson, CEO Husqvarna Group. He continues, “90% of Automower is recyclable, it eliminates the need for fertilizers, it is almost silent, has no exhaust emissions at all and delivers perfect results every time without you having to lift a finger.”

Husqvarna has been producing robotic lawnmowers since 1995 and around 50,000 of the quiet, emission-free garden robots are already in use.

Automower Solar Hybrid has been designed at the Husqvarna global design centre in Sweden and is manufactured in Aycliffe, England. There's no definite pricing on the new model yet but as an indication of what to expect, the current Automower costs between €1500 and €2500.

Preview: Second-generation Smart ForFour

The Smart brand has just been launched in the U.S. and with pre-order sales already beating expectations Mercedes officials think it’s time to bring back the ForFour. The original model was quickly dropped from the Smart lineup because of lackluster sales but with carmakers around the world desperate to launch new eco-friendly models we’re likely to see Mercedes launch a second-generation version of the car in the not too distant future.

Mercedes-Benz exec Rainer Schmückle revealed during January’s Detroit Auto Show that officials were considering relaunching the car but were unsure whether to badge it as a Smart or a Mercedes-Benz.

As this latest rendering suggests, the four-door Smart will likely be a stretched version of the current ForTwo. This also suggests the car would mimic the current model’s engine lineup, including both petrol and diesel three cylinder engines and the upcoming hybrid-drive. There could also be a zero-emission electric version of the car. Mercedes is currently testing an electric ForTwo concept, which features a 30kW electric motor and has a range of about 115km.

There are plenty of competitors just around the corner as well. Volkswagen is currently developing its new up! family of minicars and even Mitsubishi’s own Colt, which the previous ForFour was based on, is selling beyond expectations.

February 26, 2008 Riding the wave of interest started by the Piaggio MP3 and Gilera Fuoco three-wheelers, French scooter importer Sidam is planning to try its luck with a new bike that turns the concept backwards. The Xnovo gives the tilting triangle wheelbase concept a much less fun, more utilitarian application than its Italian forebears, acting like a mini-minivan with huge carrying capacity, a hard roof, windscreen and twin driven rear wheels each on its own swingarm. And while it probably handles like a barge, the Xnovo may well find a niche as a traffic-busting courier/delivery vehicle.

Three different types of Xnovo scooters are on the drawing board: a fully petrol version fitted with a 500cc Piaggio engine, a hybrid version with a 200cc petrol engine and electric backup, and a fully electric version with brushless motors mounted to each rear hub.

In the petrol version, the Xnovo's rear wheels are each belt-driven from a motor that is centrally mounted to provide for maximum carrying capacity in the bin between the rear wheels. Several body shapes appear to be under consideration, from a sporty-looking twin-seater to the far less glamorous micro-minivan in our lead photo. We can't foresee a huge market for a sports scooter with twin rear wheels - motorcycles rely primarily on the traction from their front wheels in order to stop and turn with any authority, the rear wheels being more or less along for the ride - but the concept might have genuine legs if it's pitched as a small-footprint, economical delivery mule.

We'll wait to learn more as the Xnovo moves towards a launch date rumoured to be late 2008. Price is expected to be around €8000 for the 500cc model.

March 10, 2008 An unique slice of American automotive history has been acquired by the The Henry Ford museum. Using a steel body instead of wood and incorporating a Ford Model T chassis, the 1927 Blue Bird No. 1 was a pioneering vehicle with all major school bus manufacturers moving to steel-bodies within a decade of its appearance.

Blue Bird No. 1 was the first steel-bodied school bus built by Albert Luce, Sr. in 1927. Luce was the owner of Ford dealerships in Fort Valley and Perry, Georgia when one of his customers requested a vehicle to transport workers to a cement plant. After having very limited success with a wood-bodied bus (the wood deteriorated before the customer could finish paying for the vehicle), Luce turned to using steel angles and channels, steel sheets, wood and canvas for the construction. The new bus (complete with a 1927 Ford Model T chassis) was sold to Frank Slade of Marshallville, Georgia to be used as a school bus.

“Blue Bird embodies the ingenuity and resourcefulness of one man,” said Patricia Mooradian, president of the institution. “By taking one innovation, the Model T, and using it as the foundation for his school bus, Mr. Luce changed the paradigm of transportation for school-age children in terms of safety and reliability. Within eight years, all major school bus manufacturers were producing steel-body buses.”

Following the Depression Luce sold his Ford agencies and concentrated full-time on manufacturing school buses. His new company Blue Bird Body Company is still in operation today.

“Donating Blue Bird No. 1 to The Henry Ford at this time is meaningful to me for many reasons,” said Albert L. “Buddy” Luce, Jr., son of Albert Luce, Sr. “Last year was the 80th anniversary of Blue Bird Body Company (now Blue Bird Corporation) and I feel this is a great way to acknowledge that milestone. In addition, 2008 is the centennial of the Model T Ford. Blue Bird No. 1 will be a valuable addition to the collection of this great institution.”
